Message from the Chief – Back to School Aransas Pass 2015 – Summer break is over and now it’s back the the hustle bustle of weekly school life. Just as we hope you enjoyed a great summer break, we likewise want to make sure your have a safe and enjoyable 2015-2016 school year.

As it is with the start of any new school year, many become overwhelmed or stressed from trying to get everything in order for the first day, week of school. Please plan your daily start a bit earlier this week and be mindful of our kiddos and their safety, while on your commute.

Consider the following safety tips and know what to expect from law enforcement. Safety is our number one priority.

Walkers

Remind your children to pay special attention to traffic signals and crossing guards while on their commute. Never cross the street against a red light, even if you don’t see any traffic coming. If able, wear reflective clothing/backpacks or wear bright colors so drivers can see you easier. Plan a safe walking route to and from school or the bus stop, and parents take note of your child’s route. Choose the most direct way with the fewest street crossings. If commuting by foot, children are better off doing so in groups. Lastly, teach your children to avoid suspicious locations or people and to report those instances to a person of trust (teacher, officer, or other trusted adult).

Cyclists

Teach children to obey the rules of the road when riding a bike. Often times, cyclists forget they must obey the rules of the road. This means cyclists must stop for red lights and stop signs, etc. Also, bicycles must have front and rear reflectors, at all times. A red taillight and clear front headlight must be used when riding after dark. Again, it would be a good idea to wear reflective material or bright clothing to help with visibility.

Motorists

Be prepared for heavy traffic and long delays this week. Plan on getting an early start during the first few weeks of school, so you do not have to rush. While on your commute, be mindful of children on bikes and foot, because they may have an occasional tendency to dart out in front of you.

HANG UP AND DRIVE! – Using your cell phone for calls or texting is prohibited citywide, not just in a school zone. Officers will be issuing citations to those caught using a cell phone while driving.

Law Enforcement Activities

Police will be out in force within our school zones before, during, and immediately after school. We will be looking for speeding motorists, distracted motorist, and aggressive motorists. During the first several weeks, patrol will be exercising zero tolerance for school zone violations. This means if you are contacted for one of the following violations, you will receive a ticket.

Violations Enforced

• Passing a Stopped, loading/unloading school bus
• Illegal Parking (“No Parking” areas and double parking)
• Speeding in School Zone
• Use of Cell Phone
• Unrestrained Child Passenger

Officers will be in marked and unmarked police vehicles while patrolling school zones. Fair warning, we are watching and working to provide for another safe and prosperous school year.

Working together, we can ensure the safest, most favorable atmosphere for our children to live, learn and play this school year.
