Fraudulent Text Message – Criminal Investigations Division (CID) – One of our detectives received an alert about a fraudulent text message making its way around the Coastal Bend. Please be aware in case it makes its way to you.
A local credit union reported that some folks are receiving text messages purporting to be from the National Credit Union Association. The message claims that the recipients have reached their credit limit on their credit/debit card. The message reads as follows, or in a similar fashion:
“NCUA NOTIFICATION: Debit Card Limited! Unlock at: http:// nationalcreditunionadministration. com/us/index. php? [Phone number appearing varies, but the commonality thus far has been the preceding 6 digits: 325-200-****”]
The credit union fraud investigator advised that this is a phishing attempt to obtain personal information. Further, the NCUA has nothing to do with establishing card limits, and credit unions and banks do not send unsolicited email or text messages requesting personal information.
If you receive this message or one similar, do not click on the link, simply delete the message.
