Remembering Assistant Chief William “Bill” Haines – Today, Aransas Pass PD lost a fellow brother in law enforcement, the Honorably Retired Assistant Police Chief William “Bill” Haines.
Chief Haines began his law enforcement career on October 1988 working as a reserve police officer for Leon Valley Police Department. In February 1996, Chief Haines transferred to the Aransas Pass Police Department and quickly rose to the ranks of Assistant Police Chief, second to Chief Darrel Jones.
In 2012, Chief Haines promoted into City Management, serving as an assistant to the City Manager and the Harbor Master. Chief Haines retired his police service on August 2013 and then retired from the City of Aransas Pass mid 2015.
Shortly after retiring from the City, Chief Haines was formally honored. City Officials declared the renaming of Allen Blvd., located on the Harbor, to Haines Way. Memory of Chief Haines and his commitment to City departments, community service, and work on the harbor shall forever remain memorialized by this designation.
Chief Haines remains loved by many throughout the community. He is also known for his creative skills in photography. Many of the pictures seen throughout the City and on the City’s website were captured by him.
Chief Haines was the face of Aransas Pass, Texas when I considered the police chief position. He reached out to me and handed me the ropes, while allowing me to follow in his coat-tails on several matters.
My entry into the community and police department was smooth solely in part by the kindness and warmth of Bills welcoming. I miss his company, sense of humor, and altruistic compassion. God Bless you Bill, may you now comfortably rest in peace.
