RapidSOS – New Technology in the Coastal Bend

Aransas Pass Public Safety Receives Life-Saving Emergency Data via the RapidSOS ClearinghouseFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aransas Pass Police Department/Public Safety, 3-5-2020 – The Aransas Pass Police Department PSAP is now receiving accurate device location data for 9-1-1 calls from iPhones with iOS 12+ and Android phones version 4.0+, as well as additional emergency data from apps like Uber, wearables, connected homes, and connected cars, via the RapidSOS Clearinghouse.

The nation’s 50-year-old legacy 911 infrastructure was designed for landlines and provides almost no data to first responders besides a voice-only connection. Through the RapidSOS Clearinghouse, Aransas Pass is able to access life-saving emergency data from supplemental sources at no cost — including accurate location data from iPhones with iOS 12+ and Android phones version 4.0+.

Aransas Pass PD always seeks to implement 9-1-1 technology tools that will improve emergency response for its community. Current Aransas Pass PSAP technology provides inaccurate and delayed location data which ends when the call disconnects.

“ Wireless calls account for 93% of all 911 calls coming into our office. RapidSOS will give us valuable seconds, even minutes in locating these callers during an emergency. There are times people are so frantic, we cannot understand what they are saying. This tool is huge in getting someone to them quickly.”
