What training was APPD doing last week?

The Aransas Pass Police Department training division was busy last week. We had several courses going on simultaneously, so here is what we were up to.

Last Wednesday, we had our quarterly defensive tactics class. We not only train our officers in these defensive tactics skills, but we also provide this training to all APPD employees. At this course, we had one of our Animal Control Officers and one of our Telecommunications Officers. We want to ensure that our officers know these skills and that all the Police Department Employees have the skills to defend themselves should the situation arise.

Last Tuesday and Thursday, our Patrol Detective, Jack McCarty, instructed two Self-Aid, Buddy-Aid Classes in Rockport. We instructed 25 students in these skills. You might be wondering why we are teaching for Rockport Police Department, and the answer is simple. We are a contract training provider by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, which comes with the responsibility to provide training to our department and those agencies around us that are not training providers. Also, at the end of the day, when a major incident happens, we all work together and we might be the “buddy” they are there to save.

Lastly, our own Capt. Jones and Detective Poe were down in Weslaco taking the Advanced Instructor Course. This class is 40 hours and focuses on class management, public speaking, curriculum development, needs assessments, task analysis, and general issues on adult learning. This class was amazing, and both attendees brought back a wealth of information that will improve the instruction we provide here at APPD. There are very few certified advanced instructors in the state, and we are happy to have a couple of our own. To be certified as an Advanced Instructor by TCOLE, you must have at least three years of teaching experience, have a TCOLE Basic Instructor Certificate, and complete this course.

A special thanks to Rockport Police Department for the invite, Aransas Pass Civic Center for always working with us to facilitate our training classes, JD Hinojosa with South Texas Combatives for always coming through with excellent defensive tactics classes, and Instructor Z and Associates for putting on an amazing Advanced Instructor Class.
